Details not yet available, but check Alnwick Harriers websitBeadnell Harbour Northumberland http://www.alnwickharriers.co.uk/coastal_run.htm

There will be 12 races in the series. 3 will be 5k, 4 will be 10k, with 3 half-marathons and 2 ‘one-off’ distances. You can run as many, or as few, as you wish. The more you run in, the more points you will obtain.

The Ladies’ and Men’s Championships are scored separately. So at the end of the series, there will (hopefully) be a Men’s Champion, and a Ladies Champion.

Points are scored as follows:
• 5 points for completing the race. (except Coastal Run, 10 points will be scored)
• 15 Points to anyone achieving a ‘personal best’ within the series at a particular distance. So for example, if you run the 2nd 10k race in the series faster than you ran the first 10k, you win an additional 15 points. If you do that again in the 3rd 10k in the series, there’s another 15 points. Similarly you could do the same with the 3 x 5k races, and with the 3 half marathons. Obviously you cannot win ‘pb’ points if you only compete in 1 race of each distance in the series.
• Points according to your finishing place in the race, relative to other ERs. If there are 5 female Eden Runners in a race, the first finisher gets 5 points, 2nd gets 4, 3rd gets 3, etc. Same principle, obviously, for the blokes. (Note – Coastal Run, double points)

So to take an example, let’s look at Stevie Gonzalez. He turns up for the Moorclose 10k at Workington, one Tuesday in May 2009. He is a fully paid up member of Eden Runners, and has remembered to bring his green ER vest. Some of his club team mates have turned up too, there are 8 blokes and 6 lasses. Stevie has a stormer of a race, and finishes impressively in 45.06, a good 53 seconds faster than the time he ran at the Stanley Park 10k in March. He was 3rd male Eden Runner to finish. All of his team-mates manage to finish in one piece. Fortunately, he has brought a calculator to work out how many points he’s got from the race:

Completing the race – 5 points.
PB Points – 15 points
Place points – 6 points. (8 male ER finishers – 8 points for 1st place, 7 for 2nd, so Johnny gets 6 points for 3rd)

So Stevie wins 26 points from this race (5+15+6)

Some important points though:
Points awarded will be based on OFFICIAL RESULTS ONLY – it doesn’t matter what your own stopwatch says.
Club vests MUST be worn.
Only fully paid-up members can take part in the Club Championships

We have tried to choose races on dates which, by and large, avoid the obvious holiday weekends. This is in order to give as many of our members as possible the best chance to compete in as many events as they can. One or two are within a few days of each other, but they are generally among the shorter races, and hopefully this will not cause major problems. In any case, we are not advocating that everyone runs all 12 events – the main purpose of this is to encourage participation along with some (hopefully) friendly competition.

And we are also aware that there will be some travelling involved. We can of course share vehicles, which not only cuts costs but helps (in my opinion) to promote ‘team spirit’ amongst members. Some of the races are quite far afield, but all are within fairly easy reach of the determined traveller. Again, the more of us attend these events, the higher we can raise the profile of the club. Especially if we are all brilliant, and win prizes. For example, Lancaster & Morecambe AC gave the Club £60 in vouchers for our support of the 2008 5k Series. That’s a good example of the sort of impression we are creating.

We have again included the Coastal Run (Sunday 12 July 2009) as the final event in the Series. We had a fantastic day last year, hopefully we can do it all again this year. For those who don’t know, the race HQ and carparking is at Alnmouth on the Northumberland coast. The start is several miles to the north (there are buses laid on), on the beach at Beadnell harbour. The route is basically south along the beach, then up through sand dunes onto the coastal path. From there, the terrain varies between gravel path, tarmac, back to the beach, past Dunstanburgh Castle, coastal footpath, through Craster village, more footpath, a bit more tarmac, and finally back to the beach for the finish at Alnmouth. Total distance will be around 13.5miles, but varies because of high tide times. This run is even more scenic, dare I say it, than most fell races. Hopefully we can muster a good presence. Note there will DOUBLE POINTS scored at this event, to encourage participation.
